How to Make the Most of the Independent Schools Show

Coming up soon is the well known Independent Schools Show in Battersea. It's worth popping the date in your diary if you're interested Saturday 14 November 10:00 - 17:00 and  Sunday 15 November 11:00 - 16:30     There are a huge amount of schools at the show, and if you pre register it's free to attend, so get yourself organised now. I've been to the show and I'd love to share my thoughts for you.  I have no relationship with the organisers so I just thought I could be totally honest with you about it to ensure you make the absolute best of the day. It's very, very daunting when you first walk in. I found it totally overwhelming.  However, don't run a mile.  A little bit of preparation work will really help you make the best of it! The layout is officially by area which is good but you can get in a muddle (or maybe that was just me).  I'd write out a list of schools you are keen to visit and target them.  The prep and senior schools are mixed in together so keep focused on who you want to talk to. Lots of people bring children and there are loads of buggies.  Be warned lots of the schools have little coffee tables with sweets at children height.  Some of the schools have become a little kinder to us parents and hand out balloons and things.  Some even had stands where little people can have a play - others have nothing so take supplies and entertainment if you're taking the children.  It gets pretty crowded...

A Guide to Winchester Schools

Please enjoy this guest post from Jennie at Scout Bee filling us in about all there is to know about the schools in Winchester. Winchester Schools – an overview of the Outstanding state-run options Winchester enjoys a great, and worthy, reputation for excellent schools across all stages. It’s by far the major reason families give us for wanting to move to the area, particularly from London. Virtually all the state primary and secondary schools in Winchester and the surrounding area are rated by Ofsted as ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’, and there’s always a great deal of competition to get into the most popular ones. It’s worth having a good understanding of the catchment areas and different admissions criteria to stand the best chance of getting a place for your child at your preferred school. Here’s a quick overview of the “Outstanding” state schools in the area, where location is (almost) everything: Primary Schools One of Winchester’s top primary schools is St Faith’s Church of England Primary School, which was recently ranked joint No.1 in the country by the Department of Education. It is a small school with a caring, family atmosphere and it’s worth knowing that the previously strict faith criteria have been dropped in the latest admissions policy. With an intake of only 20, it’s now catchment area that is the most important criteria for new applicants. City centre dwellers are fortunate enough to have the chance to send their children to St Bede Church of England Primary School, which boasts a fantastic location, in the centre of Winchester, right beside The Rec. It is a happy, buzzing school...

Tatler State Schools

Tatler have produced a list of State Schools that have impressed them.  This is the second year they have produced the Tatler Schools List judged by visiting the schools and speaking to staff and current parents.  Tatler isn't perhaps where you'd first consult when looking for State Schools but their guide has proved very popular. I would come under some criticism if I suggested you buy a house just to get into these schools for a number for reasons;  not least because more often than not they are massively over subscribed and their catchment areas are extremely small and change year on year.  However if you're looking for inspiration of places to live this might prove a useful list as a starting point. Tatler have helpfully divided their list into Primary and Secondary and if you'd like more information about each school you can visit the full list by clicking the links above.  Just for ease we've marked the primary schools in yellow, the secondary schools in red.   Please don't forget this is a limited list of schools, there are many fantastic other state Schools around so don't be limited by this list!  To find others have a look at The School Guide or The Good Schools Guide for starters. (you can zoom in and if you click on the markers you'll see more information about the schools)   You might be interested to read our article supplied by Sexey's on the benefits of State Boarding.  Sexey's was listed as one of the top schools in the Tatler List.  To read the article on State boarding click this link.  ...
