can anyone recommend a Hampshire based ‘ Estate Lettings’ type company eho can help us find a rural cottage / house to rent ? Rightmove isn’t that great for what we’re looking for.

My husband and I have just returned from 8 years in Sydney, Australia. We are very keen to find a rural house to rent in Hampshire, ideally in one of the lovely villages, surrounded by fields with a 10 or 15 minute drive to the nearest station that will take him into London every day for work.

    Thanks in advance

Try Moundsmere Estates near Basingstoke and BCM near Winchester or The Country House Company at Hambledon

    Hi Julia
I’m a property search agent and have recently just completed a property search for a family also relocating from Australia, and we trawled Hampshire and Wiltshire for rural rentals. There’s a variety of different companies out there and it’s a case of working through them all, keeping an ear to the ground. Please feel free to contact me directly at if you’d like any help or would like to use my services. It would be good to understand an idea of your budget to see what might be achievable.
    Kind regards

Hi Julia – You could try Knight Frank’s Rural Consultancy based in Hungerford (they manage estates over a wide area), 01488 688507.

Williams of Petersfield cover East Hampshire, based in Petersfield we have experience in all areas from the M3 down to the south coast. Alastair Hire, is our lettings director and you can contact him on 01730 233333 or email: or visit our website at: Hope this is helpful to you.

Hello Julia – Two villages that could really work for you are Hartley Wintney and Odiham in Hampshire and I recommend McCarthy Holden as a leading letting agent for these areas. Here is a link to their web site and you can then start a property search (top right of home page) home page McCarthy Holden

In addition I would recommend you phone Jacy Barwick on 01252 842100 and discuss your requirements.

Hartley Wintney, Odiham and other nearby villages are also good for train access to London with nearby Winchfield and Fleet railway stations providing rail journeys under 55 minutes and some services I think as low as 45 minutes

    Good luck.

I would recommend contacting Goosechase Property search. Kate & Teresa have an incredible knowledge of all areas of Hampshire and link with so many agents. They will be able to find you a property before it comes to the market which meets your requirements. Good luck with your search.

Thank you SO much everyone for your super helpful advise and contacts so far !! its been so useful .

I feel I have a moral obligation to warn you against using a Hampshire letting agent called Richard Mitham (RMA), based in Petersfield. We relocated to rural Hampshire in 2010 and the pleasure of the lovely new village and countryside was tarnished by dealing with this very unpleasant company. We know others with similar negative experiences. I won’t specify details here as I don’t wish to be regarded as defamatory. Just avoid RMA !

All the best with your move.

    Hi Julia

I hope you are now settled and enjoying life back in the UK. We lived in Sydney for 3 years many years ago and have been back for numerous visits since then to see friends. It is such a fantastic city and lifestyle – not to mention the weather!

How did your search go? Did you find the house of your dreams or are you still looking.

I run a home search business based in Winchester which has a mainline station to London, Waterloo (59 mins) and some beautiful villages and small Georgian market towns within an easy drive of the station.

If you are still not completely settled – thinking of moving to a new rental or now looking to buy, please feel free to call for a chat or meet for a no obligation consultation – as well as a reminisce about sunny Sydney perhaps!

    All the best
