When I moved from Windsor to Ilfracombe, a major concern was how to run my business from remote North Devon. There is no doubt that it is harder to find clients here than along the M4 corridor.

Ilfracombe’s chamber of commerce folded in the 1970s when the railway closed and three years ago there were some public meetings to discuss a new forum. As a result of speaking, I was elected chairman of COMBEbusiness, the new business group for Combe Martin, Ilfracombe and Woolacombe.

COMBEbusiness is going from strength to strength and on Thursday 6 March 2014, we are hosting OPEN FOR BUSINESS, a free business conference and exhibition at the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe.

As well as showcasing many of our fantastic businesses, it’s also an opportunity to find out what’s happening in the business community here, to hear about business and work opportunities as well as investment and regeneration.

Some of the advantages of living and working here are:

    • Hundreds of independent shops, restaurants, pubs and hotels
    • Business parks
    • Two global manufacturing plants
    • Location in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
    • Proximity to Exmoor National Park
    • Award-winning sandy beaches and craggy cliffs
    • Working harbour and secluded coves and bays

If you’re thinking of moving to a remote area and wondering about how to start or move your business or work in general, you’d be most welcome to attend.

You can find more details and register for free entry at

We’d love to see you, although the sea will still be chilly in March
