We’re hoping to move from London to the Dorking area this year (or somewhere in the area between Guildford and Reigate with Dorking as our preferred centre). We have a son who’s currently in reception and I’m interested to know what people do about moving schools mid year, as I hear that generally they are all very over subscribed in the surrey area. We have him in an amazing school at the moment and the stress of worrying about school places is making me super anxious. It feels like you can’t move with any certainty as you can’t arrange a school place in advance. We are planning on renting initially so can hopefully move quickly at least! Any reassuring words or tips? I feel completely stuck as we really want to move but I don’t want to end up with him stuck in a terrible school miles from home if that’s all that’s available, especially as we have another younger son to worry about in a year! Thanks

    Hi Rachel
Completely understand, I always say chose the school first if you’re looking to move. Schools won’t be able to offer you a secure place until you have a permanent address in their catchment area and there is a space. However, it’s almost easier to move mid school year as you can literally ring round to see who has a space in their current reception. You’re lucky to be looking at moving to this area as there are numerous good schools in the villages surrounding Dorking.
    Good luck
