    Hi there
We’re thinking of moving to the East Devon/South Somerset area this summer and I’m just trying to get some insiderinfo on the local schools. One of the schools that keeps coming up in our Rightmove sessions is Holyrood SChool in Chard. It has Ofsted Grade 1, which is obviously a huge positive, but just wondered if there are any locals on here who could share some first-hand knowledge?
    Thanks for any help!

Hi Gareth. I live in Taunton which is not far away. I do not have first hand info on Holyrood School but I could probably ask around. Taunton is spoilt for very good schools and an excellent 6th Form College though. I cannot recommend the area more highly, we are such a well kept secret (not now!), unspoilt countryside, access to coast, London in 2 hrs by train, and really good shopping in Exeter not far away. Hope that helps. Sophie

Hi Gareth, I know the area well, I think Wadham School in crewkerne is better than Holyrood, also Colyton school which might be in the area you are thinking about . There is also a very good school in Lyme Regis. Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for your replies. We don’t really know the Taunton area, hence it’s not been our radar. A failing we may have to rectify when we’re down in the area next week.
Kate – yes, the dreaded Colyton word! I think there’s a bus from Chard to Colyton, not sure about Crewkerne. Holyrood School is Ofsted Grade 1, whereas Wadham is only grade 3. I know Ofsted is only one opinion, but it would be difficult to justify a move from where we are now (which has a grade 1 primary and secondary) to a new area with a grade 3. Obviously, it would be a dream if any of the children got in to Colyton, but I believe it’s incredibly competitive isn’t it? That’s why we want to make sure there’s a good local school to fall back on.

    A message from a local.
Holyrood is now an academy school, like the school my 3 have attended, since becoming an academy its reputation has improved. 2 of mine have gone to universities the youngest is in her final GCSE year. In somerset there are lots of village primaries which even those who favour independent schools send their children too. The academies and state schools have 2000 or more pupils from mixed backgrounds. Essentially with all schooling, its where your child fits in the schooling system, whether bright or average or in need of extra support, plus the peer groups they join. There is one school to avoid and that is Stanchester School.

Have you thought of Sherborne in West Dorset? This also is a beautiful area to live. I recommend the Gryphon School – look at its website http://www.gryphon.dorset.sch.uk for all information. If its village life you want there are many in the area (with school bus services into Sherborne) i.e. Chetnole, Leigh, Thornford, Yetminster, Bradford Abbas to name a few.

Thanks for your input everyone. We love the Sherborne area Dodo – but unfortunately my wallet doesn’t!
Sophie – could you suggest some villages around Taunton that might be worth a look at when I’m down next week?
    Thanks very much.

May I suggest you look at the website of Into Somerset http://www.intosomerset.co.uk. Whilst the organisation is focussed on helping businesses to relocate to Somerset, it is widely recognised that people relocating need help. Fully appreciate your initial enquiry was regarding Holyrood School in Chard. If you could however share with me the items that appear highest on your wish list (clearly schooling is one) which may include public transport, road/rail access, rural or urban environment, leisure, hobbies etc. I will then be able to provide you with a much more detailed response.

    We are here to help.

Gareth, I feel awful not to have picked up on your message about schools around Taunton, you are probably well on your way to being sorted by now. (we are trying to move house ourselves, a blog in itself). Let me know if you still need info, can give you my email. Sophie

Hi Sophie, no, not too late actually! We lost one house so are now on the hunt for another. Could you recommend any nice villages around the Taunton area with decent schools that might be worth us looking at? Thanks for your help. Gareth

    Hi there,
My parents are between Taunton and Yeovil – one of their nearest villages is South Petherton which was very highly rated in one of the Halifax/Country Life/Rightmove type surveys for its school and quality of life – it has a butcher, baker, deli, small Co-op and is a lovely place – it’s got the A303 on the doorstep, and Taunton not too far away. They are in a small hamlet a couple of miles away and their next door neighbours children all go to Colyton. They do most of their shopping in South Petherton or Langport and avoid Yeo-vile like the plague.

My mother used to work in the local area in local schools (not a teacher, but don’t want to out her by saying what her profession was!) but she said Chard was really not a nice place to be and I hope I’m not going to offend lots of people here, but it has a significantly above average rate of intermarriage and inbreeding, and used to have big issues with drugs. Crewkerne is a nice village, although I’m not sure about the schools. My brother and I went to private schools in Sparkford and Sherborne respectively, and that was some time ago so really can’t help on the best ones now.

Best of luck with the move – it’s a glorious part of the world. I would move back in a heartbeat if my husband wasn’t tied to London!

Thanks AHW, that’s really helpful. Yes, you’e not the first person to be less than glowing about Chard, despite the school now being a Grade 1 Ofsted. A reminder, I suppose, that Ofsted reports aren’t everything. I keep coming across South Petherton’s name too, as a good place to aim for. More exploring to do methinks…
