As our 17year old enters his last years school education, we’re thinking ahead and contemplating a move back north. (Im originally from scotland and DH from North East but neither are practical as we’re likely to need to travel to London twice a week for the next 5 years or so). We’ve visited southwell laxton tuxford and retford – liked all! Know that Newark has good train links as does Retford but wd like some local views on areas we should explore. Villages are fine as long as its relatively easy access to get to an airport, good coffee, bookshops and cinema (but not too keen on muliplex!)

    Hi,
Sorry for (very) late reply! We are doing the same. We fairly quickly chose the Newark area versus Grantham. Although commute from Grantham shorter Newark has more about it. We actually ended up buying in Newark itself but the surrounding villages of Farndon and Coddington are very nice and accessible if you’re after more peace and quiet. Collingham also probably worth considering because has train station

Hi, I’m originally from Notts, and we moved to near Retford in Jan 2010, after 16 years in London. We’ve found it lovely here, and easy to commute back to London for work.

Thanks so much Jo and Jennifer – really heloful!

@Jo – As you chose Newark itself any areas there to avoid or that you particularly recommend?

And same question @Jennifer re Retford areas and villages… quite liked the villages to the north of Retford, barlby etc. Any views on villages worth exploring? Loved Retford georgian market square. But the period properties we saw seemed mostly to be flats/terraces. In Retford itself vwhat are the best parts/areas to avoid? We prefer either period houses or v contemporary properties ( or feaabilit yto maybe update… substantially . Basically nothing box like whuch we know limits our options- but get why make it easy…!!all thoughts welcome!

The villages are nice. We live in Lound, which in north of Retford, and lovely. There are lots of nice villages surrounding the area. Everton is popular. The villages south of Retford do tend to have power station views, so we chose to look at the ones north.
In Retford, London road area is popular, but like you say, a lot of the period properties in Retford are attached. The villages have nice detached cottages and farm houses.
    I like Newark too.
