What happens when I move to the country, and my house isn’t on mains gas?
Moving out of London in pursuit of a new life in the country can seem daunting, but it could be the best decision you ever make.
There’s plenty to think about when heading for the hills, but one thing that is often overlooked is what fuel source to use for home heating and cooking. Alastair Lovell, National Sales Manager at Calor gas discusses the best fuel choices for rural homes.
When you move to the country, you may find your new home is ‘off-grid’, with no access to mains gas. As a rural home mover, you may also inherit an older oil heating system and boiler, which is likely to be less efficient than newer systems. This could cost you a fair bit if you encounter issues further down the line, so it’s a great idea to look at upgrading to a new, more efficient boiler, or heating system before you move in.
Many home movers find that this is an ideal time to look at alternative fuel options, such as LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas). Just like mains gas, LPG can be used for heating your home and providing hot water, as well as for cooking and fuelling gas fires. It’s also probably cheaper than you think to switch from oil to LPG.
For example, replacing a potentially leaky old oil tank can cost as much as £2,000* plus the added expense of installation, maintenance and insurance.
Many LPG companies such as Calor actually own the LPG storage tank, and for a small monthly charge, insure, maintain and even replace the tank free of charge if required, so you don’t have to worry about upkeep.
We also fit a clever telemetry system to our customers’ tanks that monitors the gas levels and alerts us when you need a delivery, so you needn’t worry about checking fuel levels, or even re-ordering.
Plus, you can hide the gas tank underground - so there’s nothing to spoil your view and you can really make the most of your outside space. Alternatively, if you live in a smaller property, are short of outside space or simply don’t need to use that much gas, cylinders are available too.
What’s more, LPG is the cleanest burning fossil fuel available to rural home owners, and is virtually impossible to steal – a great plus for those in rural areas where oil theft is on the rise. It’s also a perfect partner fuel for use with renewable systems, such as the Daikin hybrid air-source heat pump, which can be a great option if you decide you want a more environmentally friendly supply.
There’s a fantastic range of A-rated, high efficiency LPG boilers on the market, which may help reduce the amount of energy you use for your heating and hot water. You’ll usually find that LPG boilers are cheaper to buy than a replacement oil boiler.
There’s more to LPG than just heating and hot water too, it can also fuel a range of household appliances, including LPG tumble dryers, fixed fires, BBQs and patio heaters – plus for cooking it gives you a real flame for instant and controllable heat and the reassurance of an additional fuel other than electricity in case of a power cut.
